World Rabies Day

The second World Rabies Day will occur on 28 September 2008, with the aim of ‘Working Together to Make Rabies History!™’.

The World Rabies Day initiative involves a wide range of professionals from human and animal health organisations, and corporate and non-profit partners. The goal is to support human rabies prevention and animal rabies control through awareness and resources. The initiative was created by researchers and professionals who formed the Alliance for Rabies Control in 2006.

More than 55,000 people die from rabies world-wide each year, yet rabies is a preventable disease. Children are often at greatest risk from rabies as they are more likely to be bitten, and less likely to report bites.  Bites in children are also more likely to be in high-risk sites on the body (i.e. the head or face).

All travellers to rabies endemic areas should be aware of the risk and exercise precautions. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine should be considered by those at increased risk.

Country specific advice on rabies can be found on the NaTHNaC Country Information Pages.
